I was an Audi mechanic for about a year and it was considered normal for them to burn oil. I knew other mechanics who owned Audis and thought nothing of adding oil once in awhile. I never heard any real explanation why. The fact that we didn't find major problems caused by oil starvation led me to believe that the reccomended oil capacity was a little high. We never recommended adding a quart every thousand miles but did recommend checking the oil and adding if neccesary. We also worked on Porsches and the late model air cooled 911s had a plastic pan under the engine filled with dessicant bags bonded to the inside apparently to absorb oil leaks. I was told Mercedes has used something similar. So maybe losing oil is a German car trait.
