While you had the rubber coupler off, it would have been handy to check the
shaft from the steering box for play when twisting and pushing in and out.
There should not be any significant slackness detectable either way.
If you adjust the box, just follow the instructions in the manual (you have one
I assume?).  As Russ says, check the top cover bolts are tight.
Lift the front; steering central; undo the big locking ring; take up slack on
the large inner socket screw to eliminate the in and out play (don't tighten).

If the play all but disappears, you may not need to do the more awkward
adjustment on the top (ideally you need a specially bent wrench for that).
Check the steering is free through the full lock, with no tight points.

Have you definitely ruled out slack in the steering ball-joints and the front
axle stabiliser bar?

The steering damper won't affect the slack in your steering system at all, but
might make a clonk as it rocks from side to side in a sloppy rubber bush.
