Re: [T3] Air Cleaner

With standard paper elements, you're drawing intake air from the engine
compartment rather than from outside, so the air's a little hotter. This
does have an effect on breathing, since there's less oxygen in a given
volume. This will be most important under extreme conditions when you need
every bit of cooling you can get.

It's my perception that most everyone here thinks the oil bath works better,
lasts longer and is less wasteful than disposable filters, even in dusty
environments (like here). But VW did make a paper-filter option for the Type
3, ostensibly for North Africa and South America if I understand correctly.
It's an assembly similar to the oil-bath arrangement, drawing air in the
stock manner, but with a Fram-style ring element in place of the oil sump. I
have one in the shed, and while correct filter elements are a bit of a trick
to find, they're out there and it all works just fine. If you're serious
about this change, I'd recommend looking around for one of these.

But I'd also recommend gathering some more opinions first; the oil bath is
better than you might think.
