If you're going to put the swing axle back on later, it's best to do it their 
way. To do it your way you will probably have to disconnect the cables at the 
front anyway, just because it's hard to disconnect the cables at the rear as 
long as there is still tension on the cables.

I've never done it your way, but I can imagine that it might be possible. If 
you are installing a different transmission in there then it might be the 
simplest thing to do.

At any rate, it would be smart to get that big nut loose before you remove the 
transmission from the car, as it's almost impossible to get off once it's off 
the car, unless you have a really big air impact wrench. That's also the best 
time to try to get the drum loose.
