IIRC, we had a conversation about this long ago. I still can't understand how 
this could be, but I accept your observation. 

I suspect that there will always be some settling due to rust in the splines in 
our rust belt cars, but I thought you were talking about more than that. Of 
course if Bob was right about the numbers he saw, then that's a LOT of settling 
that could occur and it could be responsible for a LOT of confusion when trying 
to get all this to work out just right.

I think this is just one example of where the factory manual can let you down, 
because it expects you to be working with nice clean like-new parts. Our 
reality is a little uglier.
