There are a couple of "easy" things I'd check first.

Check the level of the gear oil in the tranny, then drain it and replace it 
(use GL-4.) Check what comes out for bits and pieces of anything. Be sure to 
clean out the magnets in the drain plugs.

Check the shift coupling.

Check the shift bushing.

If none of these turns up a solution, check the muffler bearings.   ;-)
