Can you tell us where on the case this cap is located? => Can it be repaired? Let's establish first whether it's a problem. Is it leaking oil? Is the motor running? Running well? Etc. => If I am spending that much money to replace the case => do I just replace the engine? There's not a lot of distinction between replacing the case and replacing the motor. If you're asking whether it would be smarter to buy a case and rebuild rather than buy a crate long block, that will really depend on who would do the rebuild for you. If you've got a good rebuilder, I'd go with that.
