I've never heard of or seen the term Variant used in Canada. Early cars got 1500 badges when other markets got variant badges. I have an early Canadian squareback-only brochure that calls the car a VW1500 station car, you can see the scan here: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/lit/t3_1962.php . Everything else I've seen uses the squareback terminology. I read Small Wonder about a year ago and I think that's where I read about the Variant/Valiant thing.
