I would suspect the distributor is not advancing (frozen) or some other 
electrical or fuel delivery problem. 

I drove my first Type 34 home about 500 miles with a rusted out, blown 
exhaust with no acceleration problems. 

I have driven a Type 3 that was running only on 2 cylinders (crossed wires) 
and it still went 35-40 mph.
