If the replacement one was black, then I've seen a number of those which did not last long. There may be good ones which are also black, however. The Bosch ones are metallic grey and are of uniformly good quality. I'm suspicious of your mechanic. It sounds like he's trying to sell you something you may not need or want. There are a lot of "upgrades" of various kinds out there whose main goals are to separate you from some of your money. In general I suggest caution. I've sent you my charging system FAQ so that you should be able to check out your system now to see if it is working correctly and fix it if you find things that are bad. The original generator system is VERY reliable, so all it needs is to be properly installed and not abused, and it will last a very long time. -- Jim Adney jadney@vwtype3.org Madison, WI 53711-3054 USA ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ List info at http://www.vwtype3.org/list | mailto:gregm@vwtype3.org
