Interesting. All my experience is with later (FI) dists. Is it possible that
early engines put the # 1 dist output connection in a different position? If
so, I would expect them to rotate it CCW rather than CW (which you've described
above.)

The type 3 engines I'm familiar with put the # 1 turret at the LR of the dist
when in the car. If you rotated things 90 deg CCW this would make sense, as
long as the vacuum can would still fit.

Otherwise, I wonder if it is possible that someone switched your shaft with
that from a beetle. I don't even know if beetle shafts are different, but it
seems like possibility.

I've got parts breakdowns for Bosch dists here, and when I went to check shaft
parts I find that Bosch did not even make the shafts available as spares. Upper
shafts are shown for dists which have mechanical advance, but there are no
lower shafts or one-piece shafts. They're not even shown on the exploded views.
Odd, I never noticed this before. The only other part they don't show is the
dist body itself, which is understandable.

I'll have to look tonight to see if VW ever supplied the shafts as spares.
