Yeah I see how to dismantle this end connector, the wires for the ignition are too long to go into this, and I didn't want to cut them-for fear of cutting too short. I just soldered on the old ends, but I did a neater job, with shrink wrap. Hopefully these will be thin enough if I ever have to disassemble. The wires were previousl soldered onto the original ends, but not the best job. I just would prefer to have the spade connectors-it looks cleaner, and if I need to get at the steering column thing again... As for the flasher problem, I tried to take the emergency switch out, and I got the knob off, and the escuthecon plate, I just can't seem to pull the switch down, it's all tangled up in the wires under the dash. Not sure how to get it out without taking the whole thing apart. I've got to figure something out, I don't like driving without blinkers.... Thanks for the lead on the wire that is incorrect... -Kevin -----Original Message----- From: Dave Hall [mailto:dave@hallvw.clara.co.uk] It is possible to dismantle the housing that the end plug fits in and remove the wire with plug intact, but I remember it's not that obvious - I think the housing unclips along one edge and the plastic folds back like a hinge to release the plug and wiring. The '71 has a one year only starter/ignition switch so maybe they learned from this! In the event, it's not something that needs removal often, so as long as you re-solder any joined wires and insulate them it will work fine. For the flasher problem, if the green/black/white wire between the emergency flasher switch and the turn signal is detached or in poor contact, that would give your problem - see http://www.hallvw.clara.co.uk/wire71t3.htm . If not, try working the emergency flasher switch a few times - could be there's a poor contact in there. It is fiddly but possible to dismantle the switch if the other wires and connections seem OK. If the circuit is marginal, unplugging and refitting the flasher relay might do the trick. If the 4-way flashers work it can't be a completely useless relay, though high resistances in the contacts might stop it switching properly. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ List info at http://www.vwtype3.org/list | mailto:gregm@vwtype3.org
