The correct pressure is 28-30 psi, so you really don't need any higher than a
30 psi gauge. You should also hook up the gauge and take it for a drive and see
if the pressure is keeping up when the engine seems to be starving. If your
filter is clogged, this can happen with any pump.

I had a symptom like you describe (seeming starvation at the high end, which can get dangerous if you need power like when you pass someone) that was caused by a simple kink in the rubber fuel line underneath the tank. This was on a 412, but that's not really relevant. The first shop that I sent it to started replacing hundreds of $$ worth of parts. The second shop found it quickly...
