[T3] generator light/voltage regulator

I was driving around today, and heard this odd rattling type noise(in the
area of the voltage regulator. I thought it was just something loose. I
couldn't find the noise. Then I stopped at my friends, when I went to leave
the generator light didn't go out after starting the car.

I pulled over, stopped the engine-checked the fan belt-it was fine. Sa I
kept driving. Then the rattling type noise again. This time I pulled over,
and left the engine running-and felt the VR, and could feel that it was the
thing making the rattling noise.

I am thinking that the VR has gone bad and that's why the Generator light
came on, with the VR working intermittently it gets the light to go out.

The VR looks as though it was replaced fairly recently-its all shiny and new
looking.

My plan is to replace the VR. Does this seem like the right approach? What
could cause the VR to go bad, is this something that just wears out, or is
it a symptom of something else.

I'm hoping to figure this out so I can make the invasion trip....

Thanks...

Oh yeah my squareback is FI.
