Now, when I first got my car it had a completely messed up carb linkage, and only the remnants of the original kickdown switch. It's quite likely that before yesterday, the kickdown solenoid hadn't been tripped since about 1990. The fact that it works at all is pretty amazing, and a tribute to the quality of the parts VW used. It kicks down quite consistently now. I find that the best way to make sure that it will always work is to make sure the pedal is about half way down and then give it a good sharp stamp.
