In my '71, I put both a stock radio and a modern one in at various times. First and foremost, keep your original, unmolested radio mount. To install a stock one, there's a weird bracket with a rubber "nub" that mounts to the negative post then to a clip spot ("nub" receptacle) in the plastic air box. It's weird and specific, kind L shaped, to support the rear of the radio. You should have ~2" clearance in the back of the radio. The radio mount uses two screws on the bottom of the dash/center to mount it to. It's not real strong on it's own, but in conjunction with the L-thing, it's very solid. You need both pieces to properly mount it. For a modern one, make a mount out of metal or something sturdy. Mimick the original radio mount. You will need to find another way to support the rear of the unit. I used a center console underneath it. Others have used zipties/straps without a console. You can make it look pretty with a plastic housing of some kind if you dont' have a center console. Eitherway, you should have plenty of clearance for a modern stereo. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ List info at http://www.vwtype3.org/list | mailto:gregm@vwtype3.org
