i have to say, i don't agree with this statement at all...  most every 
modern (last 5 years) car out there is designed to go almost 100,000 
miles before a tune up is needed.  my 97 mazda has 193,000 miles on it 
and i finally changed the spark plugs and the body is rust free.  this 
car is driven in every kind of weather, parked in the weather until last 
fall and lives in a very humid climate now... oh, and this was a 12k 
dollar car, not a 30k car.

of course, having saide that, i would still rather drive the VWs!
