 When you say "tubes welded to the ends" do you mean that there was a single 
large tube welded at both ends that the harness had to be pushed thru?

I don't think I've ever seen this. Yes, it sounds pretty hard to deal with. I 
know the groove was there by '68.

It's been awhile since I parted out my 2 old 71s but I'm pretty sure that at 
least one of them was this later style. I know that one was a last-month-of-'71-
production car, however. The other one was earlier, but I don't remember it for 
sure. I know that the very early '72 which I parted out last summer was the 
late version.  

I have another mid-year 71 in the garage that I could look at now to refresh my 
memory, but it certainly looks like this must have been a mid-year '71 change.
