You should make sure that it is running well otherwise. How's your gas mileage? 
It should be 20 mpg or better. If not, you may be running rich and overflowing 
the crankcase with gas diluted oil.

Is there any chance that this engine was souped up by the previous owner? If he 
installed cheap oversized pistons they may not be sealing well now. This is a 
common problem.

OTOH, some blue smoke (which indicates burning oil) is common on startup if the 
car has been left sitting with a slight slant to one side overnight. Just keep 
an eye on your oil level so you don't run the engine dry and destroy it.
