Unfortunatly it may be impossible to save these old cars. My dad found a 76' deluxe, Westfalia, poptop camper in exellent condition at a Pick n' Pull in CA. He wasn't looking for a project but thought it would be a shame to let it go to the crusher. He asked the manager about buying it. The manager said there was no way he could sell it once it was out in the yard, money was not the issue. I believe it is due to the state paying them to get old cars off the road forever, in the name of smog, safety, progress... As I uderstand it once the state makes the payment the car must be dismantled and crushed. What a shame.
