Hang in there, Gary, you're doing great. GaryT=> I'm noticing a buildup of black spots under => the tail pipe. This is probably soot from the exhaust, carried there by expelled water. The water comes from condensation inside the exhaust, and is quite normal. The soot is partly burned fuel, also not unusual. => The choke on the right side carb never seems to open fully, => even when the engine warms up. So I guess this means that => the choke needs some adjustment. Be aware that the chokes are warmed by their own electric heaters, which is why there are wires to them. Both should open fully within about a minute of turning the key on, whether or not the motor is running. => put in new spark plugs Better yet, try switching the plugs left and right. => remove the brass plug and spray carb cleaner at the main jet. This might indeed dissolve something blocking the jet. The pressure could also force gunk more tightly into the jet, or push it through into a less accessible passage, so I can't recommend it. If you open that plug with the carb in the car you'll also have a quarter pint of fuel spilling on the head. Messy. Better at this point to just take the carb top off. This will tell you immediately whether fuel is getting into the carb and whether your float is working right, and you can look for sludge and junk in the bowl. If you can see no problem, I'd say put the top back on, pull the entire carb off, fuel and all, and strip it on the bench. If you apply pressure (air, aerosol carb cleaner, whatever), work against the flow of fuel.
