I'm thinking the left side carberator is not delivering fuel to the #3 and #4 cylinders. Does this seem like a reasonable theory? Can you suggest any tests that will confirm this theory?

If you have stock carbs, check the idle valve on the side of the carb is working properly. To do this turn the ignition on without starting the engine then pull the wire off the 3 & 4 side carb and listen for a click as you touch the wire to the terminal.

You can also pull the same wire off the other side while the engine is running and it should die if it is only running on 1 & 2.
