	Fortune to diagnose?  Hm.... sounds like you have it at the 
wrong shop.  Some basic tools, such as an electrical multimeter and a 
fuel pressure gauge, are all that you need.  Within a couple of 
hours, they should be able to narrow the problem down precisely and 
adjust or replace only the faulty part(s).  What is running up the 
cost?  (They shouldn't replace a single component unless they've 
measured it to be faulty with 100% certainty.)

	Depending on home much time/money/energy you have, note that 
you can just have it shipped to Michigan... costs vary a lot, but 
it's probably around a thousand dollars, give or take.

	...then I would say you almost *need* the fuel injection.  My 
'71 and '69 both started GREAT in Ann Arbor winters.  The fuel 
injection is spectacular for cold-weather starting.

	1967 stock VW Solex dual carburetors with 12V chokes and the 
original air cleaner are your best bet.

	Good luck!  Sounds like the shop is clueless about 
D-Jetronic, and would rather have you spend many hundreds of dollars 
on a carb "downgrade" just so they can dump the car out of their shop 
under its own power.  What a drag!
