Modern car alarms come with a variety of 'bells-n-whistles' and you don't need to buy an expensive unit. The $99 and less units JC Whitney sells are actually rather good and I think are pretty easy to install. Many systems come with enough stuff to get you by until you have the money to install additional features as most features simply can be wired in to the main trip wire. For example, the trip wire is activated by the door pin switches. You can wire tap into that wire a shock sensor and later you could tap in a interior sensor (great for convertibles and rolled down windows). One recommendation in the VW forum I'm on for the water-pumpers is to ALSO place a siren INSIDE the cabin. Nothing like 130dB to put your nerves on end when trying to commit a crime ;-) Of course you will want to put the interior siren in a location that isn't easy for the crook to disable it, yet still allow the noise to fill the cabin... >...These days it seems remote activated car alarmes are very commonplace.
