I think tetra-ethyl lead started being added in the 1920s.  The whole idea of
removing the lead is to prevent it being absorbed into people's (especially
kids') nervous systems, so it wouldn't be permitted in additives anyway these
days.

They also did a "de-coke" every 10,000 miles, and very few got to 100,000 miles,
so my grand-dad told me.  ;-).

Even early '50s Beetles could get certificates if they made 100,000 KM (about
60,000 miles) without engine work.
