Since my last post everything has been rechecked and reset in an effort to find the fault. I disassembled the carbs again and made sure there were no blockages and nothing holding the float valve open. In addition the valves, timing and dwell have been reset, the carbs balanced and everything checked by a friend. No more backfire. The plugs and points are brand new. The old 009 has been replaced with a SVDA (FI ) unit, with a fully functioning vac pot, a new cap and rotor. I don't think the problems were due to the distributor, but it was a change I had wanted to make for a while. Compression on all cylinders is 115-120PSI. Again, I went for a short test drive of about 10min, stopped for half an hour then came home. Perfect on the way out, but 3/4 of the way home she conked out. Suddenly started running really rough, like one cylinder bank wasn't working, and totally lacked power. There were short bursts of a few secs where she would run well, then drop into third (AT) and run crap again. As there was nothing wrong before the carb rebuild, it seems most likely that there must be a problem in the carbs. The right hand carb was wet with fuel around the front of the bowl (front is front) and seemed to be leaking from the joint between the top section and middle. The carb rebuilt kit I used was made by 'Tomspec Co.", possibly based in the states (at least that's where the instructions were printed). Anybody heard of them? Are the original Solex ones offered by Mofoco the best to get? How sensitive is the carb to the height of the float valve? Is it a matter of half a millimeter, or several millimeters? I guess it could make a difference depending on how tight you do up the float valve. Where can I find the technical specifications for the carbs? Is there a book people can recommend or can somebody send the information to me? Any assistance welcome.
