Joel, Our '73 FI Fastback had been loosing a lot of oil ever since we had it. It turned out to be leaking oil cooler seals. The top of the case was really wet, and if you leant over the engine and revved it by pulling the throttle cable, you could actually see a teaspoon's worth of oil come out each time the pressure rose. Although the manuals say oil cooler removal is an engine out job, it is not. You will end up dismantling half the LHS of the engine to get the cooler off, but its only an hour or two's work. The actual seal replacement is easy. Suddenly your oil consumption will drop to a reasonable level, and you will have a chance of keeping the case clean! I got a universal 1600 engine seal kit which had the right seals for my car. The old seals were very flat, and had no squish left to them. On ours (and yours, being a '73) there was no need to fit the spacers (small fat looking washers) between the cooler and the case. You should be able to tell if it feels right when you tighten the cooler mounting nuts as you should feel the seals compressing. I took a few photos if they would be of any use.
