AaronC=> Regular maintenance at the mechanic would probably => take care of most maintenance items (points/condenser, => valve adjustments, etc)? Sounds reasonable... Bear in mind also that mechanics' services cost about five bucks an hour compared to more like 50 today. And you could get knowledgable, fast service at the corner service station along with your gas pumped and windows washed by guys in ties and hats. There was a much higher proportion of tool-users in society as a whole, and much wider knowledge of auto mechanics. But on the flipside I'll agree that the substantial differences between American cars and VWs led to poorer service for the VWs here, more mistakes made by mechanics and owners, and consequently a dubious reputation for the cars among many Americans, which limited sales, which kept knowledge about them low, etc. Steven Ayres, Prescott AZ '66 KG1600 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ List info at http://www.vwtype3.org/list | mailto:gregm@vwtype3.org ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~ Shameless link for search engines: http://listarchive.type3.org ~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
