Bear in mind also that mechanics' services cost about five bucks an hour
compared to more like 50 today. And you could get knowledgable, fast service
at the corner service station along with your gas pumped and windows washed
by guys in ties and hats. There was a much higher proportion of tool-users
in society as a whole, and much wider knowledge of auto mechanics.

But on the flipside I'll agree that the substantial differences between
American cars and VWs led to poorer service for the VWs here, more mistakes
made by mechanics and owners, and consequently a dubious reputation for the
cars among many Americans, which limited sales, which kept knowledge about
them low, etc.
