I've never seen actual German 8mm hose. I thought they just happened to 
standardise on odd mm IDs: 5, 7, 9, 11, etc.

I've used Gates, Aeroquip, and Parker 5/16" hose as well as lots of other off 
brands. Most of them have done pretty well. The Parker is now marked 8mm/5/16" 
but they are all three layer hoses instead of the european 2 layer style: 
(rubber/fiber/rubber vs. fiber/rubber.)
