Putting it in neutral will unlock the rear wheels, assuming that the 
shifter is connected up and properly adjusted. You don't need the key 
for this. If everything is working you will need to lift the shifter as 
you pull it back.

As far as I know you can't damage an automatic by pushing it, but maybe 
someone more authoritative than me should answer this.
