There was a problem with the torque converters sold with the very first type 3 AT cars. Those TCs are identifiable by having a smaller number of cooling fins around the outside. I'll have to look up the numbers later tonight. Those early TCs had a tendency to crack at a weld and leak. If you have one of the early ones it would be worthwhile to find a later one to retrofit. The changover occurred in '69.

I'd be interested to know that, because my car was manufactured in late '68. I've no idea of course whether my torque converter (or tranny) is original.


I'm not totally sure whether the leak is actually ccoming from the torque converter. I could see that the ATF was dripping down the outside of it and onto the floor, but the source of the leak could conceivably be somewhere else.
