CurtR=> i can wiggle the rotor about a quarter inch It's probably OK, but it's possible that there's some wear and/or maladjustment that's making it a little sloppier than it could be. You can look for this where the distributor meets the distributor drive. When I install a distributor I always check to make sure the drive dog at the end of the distributor shaft looks good and isn't flopping around. There are some shims down there to make an almost-tight fit, and after years of use they are often worn razor thin. There should also be a fiber spacer washer, and this is often worn thin or plain missing, which will make for a floppy dog. The dog is a bit of a pain to get off (remove the spring and drive out the pin with a punch) if you need to replace those washers. I also sometimes see drive dogs with nubs that are worn down quite a bit from abuse of one kind or another. You want them to be pretty square so they fit better in the distributor drive. I don't know whether these parts are available new, I just collect good ones from bad/spare distributors.
