One of the very first things I was told as an aircooled VW owner was to NEVER have a fuel filter in the engine compartment... EVER. Hard and fast rule. Too easy for vibrations to pull even a plastic filter with decent, secure clamps on the fuel lines loose enough to spill gasoline on a nice hot (magnesium) motor!
