First, thanks you guys for helping me hash this out...just a means of focus...my aim is to make sure this 65 is as correct as possible. Note: This car has a single side draft carb, no clock...a blank insert, one sunvisor, cloth seats, no chrome side body trim (accept for rocker), no hood chrome. This was the simple variant...some have called it a 1500 N...although that designation appears nowhere on the car. Might this code indicate that it was a simplified Variant with a 1600 engine? M236 started in '68, and M26 started in '70. This is my first day looking at this "M" chart on the Type 3 site, but by my reading it looks like M233 and M26 were used in 64 (Model 311-314). Help me guys, am I reading this right? Wouldn't they have put a alternate engine code on the fan shroud (1600 vs. 1500)? I may just go ahead and make the stencil for what appears on the actual shroud and determine later if it was original or not. The tins are going out for powder today and I need to capture what I'm going to before cleaning today. What makes me real leary of assuming this is not original shroud is that the engine on this 32,000 mile 65 has not been messed with at all. All engine tins are there. The car has never been wrecked or damaged, save crimped bumper blades and a wrinkled driver's door. There would seem to be no reason for the shroud to have been replaced. I should be getting my "birth certificate" from VWAG soon, maybe that will help shed some light on this and other issues one I know for sure what the original destination was for this car.
