The redness is rust and dirt in the gas, maybe some water, too. You would have to catch it in a glass container and let it settle to look for water. The cracks in the overflow hose are small and nearly invisible until you get the part out. The telltale sign is strong smell of gas when turning left, and the trail left by the gas as it melts the undercoating. I recently had 2 of there overflow hoses side by side and noticed that the old one was shorter than the new one by 1/4-3/8"! I had never noticed this before, but it's clear that the rubber these are made from is not a good choice for exposure to gas, because it shrinks in use. This is probably why they break. Some thin-walled 1/2" gasoline hose should make a good replacement if you smell gas on left turns. -- Jim Adney jadney@vwtype3.org Madison, WI 53711-3054 USA ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ List info at http://www.vwtype3.org/list | mailto:gregm@vwtype3.org
