You can usually check to see if the relay will work. When the car won't start jump the terminal with the big wire from the battery to the small terminal with the wire from the switch. A remote starter switch is probably the best tool to use for this but a screwdriver can be used with extreme caution not to touch anything else. If the starter turns over using this method the relay will probably work and vise versa.
