Err, sorry about the miscommunication. By 'light goes off' I mean that it turned on; sorry bout that. I have been following Muir's book rather closely, as it makes a good deal more sense than the Service Manual. I'll try doing points by dwell and see what happens. On 19 Apr 2004 at 12:02, K Nolte wrote:
Also, after I had done that, I tried statically timing it. Got it timed perfect, light goes off everything is lined up. Tried cranking it. No dice. It would spin and spin, but never catch. On a whim once more, I rotated the Distributor a good 60-70 degree CCW, back to where it originally was. Engine starts right up, but runs really rough. Any clues?
My GUESS is that you did the static timing wrong. Turning the engine in the normal direction, you should set the timing so that the light goes ON as the timing mark goes by. My guess is that you set it to when the light went OFF. The difference should be ~50 deg, so either your estimate of the angle, or your dwell, is off a bit.
It's nice to have a dwell meter to set this. It's a lot more reliable than by eye or feeler gauge.
