I last rebuilt the engine in my '71 back in 1979, and it is still a pretty strong engine. VW never did either. If the cam and followers are of good quality, it shouldn't need it. Does anyone think that VW broke in all the millions of VW engines that they built before it left the factory?? One year, 1961, (the first year for the 40hp), they had a problem with one batch of cams that caused problems, and they replaced everyone that they could get back.
