Re: Dilemma...

Whew, had a long day today:

The owner of the '66 Variant called me around 10am. I met him at his house
shortly after. After talking to him, I learned a little about the history.
He said he thinks he's owned it since 1982 or so. It's been in his garage
for the last 10 years, so he hadn't driven it in a while. Apparently he left
it exactly the way it was when he bought it, complete with added reflectors
on the bottom, to the rear, of the front fenders, and also at the top of the
fenders and cooler latches on the rear hatch.

After looking at it closer, it is a factory red car. Pinch welt is half red
and white. The bottoms of the seats are red. The only part that isn't red is
the shifter boot. I'm not sure if these are typically red.

I had to leave before I could drive it, and told the owner that I'd give him
a call to come back.

While running errands, Brian Fye gave me a call and said he'd be in Medford
around 4:30pm, and would look over the car with me.

Now, you have to understand, he too, is interested in this car.

After he arrives, I called the owner and arrange to look at it again. Brian
(along with his wife Shannon and their daughter) and I drive over and look
at it again.

After looking it over again, I ask if we can go for a drive. The three of us
take it out for a drive. All gears work. Brakes are a little squishy on the
first pump (current owner recently replaced the master cylinder). The only
problem was a weird shake while driving one road one time, it went away
after slowing down.

Once we were back, Brian looked at the oil and noticed that it was running
hot. Not sure what the problem is.

I forgot to say, earlier in the day, after looking at it the first time, I
told my wife about it and she gave me the OK. The only stipulation was that
I could only spend $800. She had no idea what the guy was asking.

So after the test drive Brian went over to check on his family, waiting in
their car. While Brian was away, I told the owner that I could offer $800,
and he accepted! Right after, Brian came around the corner, and I smiled and
said, "You're too late, I bought the car!"

So, I'm now the proud owner of a '66 Variant with a Pigalle interior!!!

I've snapped a few pics:

There is more to the story than this, I'll let Brian take it from here...
