That's actually kind of dangerous to claim that it's OK if the engine is not under load. If I remember correctly from the classes I went to when I did the mechanic's apprenticeship it is actually *worse* to run the engine at high RPM without load. It was one of the worst things you could do to an engine.


If I remember correctly the balance of forces acting on the piston/connecting rod/crank changes and the force needed to pull the piston down on the intake stroke gets much higher, or something like that. It's been a while :)
