I have had my Notch for 2 months now, and still can not verify which model she is. She is a 1964 sunroof. She has holes on her body for chrome trim. She has pop-out windows. She was pearl white with cord silver interior, so says VW. She has a wrap around dash and z-type arm rests. @ ash trays in back. Premium fuel sticker under hood by gas tank. She has springs for her trunk lid, no prop rod. All of these things say 1500 "S". But.......her vin is 315075763, and the 315 says standard lhd notch, not "S", and she has knobs for the lights and wipers, no push button console. I read at www.type3.com that she may be a rare 1500 "E" which is identical to the "S" but has a standard motor w/side draft carb. I don't want to proceed with the car until I know. Anyone???????????

So, all indications are 1500S except the sidedraft carb? Could it be that the single carb was fitted later for some reason? If you're fairly certain that the engine and carb are original then it could be the following:

Option M3: Single carburetor engine instead of twin carburetor engine from engine no. 255 340

This was a somewhat common option for cars delivered to places where premium fuel was expensive and/or difficult to obtain, such as certain markets in Asia and Africa. According to the parts list option M3 is the fabled "E" model, but I'm not sure the "E" badge was used in all markets. It was definitely not specific only to Canada. There was also an option that put S model trim on an N model car, but since your VIN is for a 1965 1500S model built in late 1964 we can rule that out.
