Are your heater channels and exchangers really perfect? Could any fumes get through the rear inner wheel wells when the fan suction becomes less and the plenum chamber pressure rises? I've seen Type 3s with a route between the rear fenders and the rear seat area. It's difficult to imagine how it might reach the inside otherwise. Properly functioning FI runs a very low CO% normally - I suppose it could get richer on over-run, and smell more, though I thought the injectors stop squirting until the rpm gets below about 1200. I can't see why lifting-off makes the air-flow change until the speed changes significantly. The fact it only happens when the windows are 'cracked' may mean it's to do with the cabin being at a little below outside air pressure, and you're getting the fumes entering that low pressure area. You would be breathing fumes all the time, but only notice them when they smelled - that seems unlikely as I would expect you to get some signs of CO poisoning after a few hours driving if not sooner. I don't get it on my late Square, and if anything the exhaust on my twin carb should smell a bit more than your FI does. Do the engine cover and tailgate seals appear good? Dave.
