I agree that it is impossible for it to travel all the way along the side of the car and into the cracked open front windows. I suspect that what is happening is that the pressure difference between the inside of the vehicle and the outside is changing with the rapid deceleration when you lift your foot off the gas and you are getting air moving into the vehicle through the flow-thru vents on the d-pillars of the late squares. I suspect that this does not happen on the early cars that don't have these vents unless their rear hatch seal is bad.

The air flow behind the Squareback is certainly turbulent enough for exhaust to be present around these vents as evidenced by the amount of oil I washed off Sophy's rear window after the trip to Parma. She has always had a little bit of an oil leak off the bottom of the engine. If the turbulence is enough to lift relatively heavy oil onto the rear window, moving the exhaust gases up there is no problem.

Your Fastback probably didn't have the flow-thru vents and the airflow around the back of a Fasty will be very different. Certainly less turbulent around the vents then on a Square.

Anyone else with a late Square with the flow-thru vents experience this? If my theory is correct it should happen on all the cars under similar conditions. Of course, anyone that was at Parma knows how DARK Keith's Square really is, so it could be something unique to his car due an undisclosed force-air induction modification or some such thing. 8^)
