You can heat the plastic cap (boiling water may do, or a hair-dryer for a bit
more heat) and push a broom-stick or similar size to spread the lugs a bit.

If there's a bit of spare length to the PS hose, you may find cutting 1/2" off
will allow it to grip better.  Remember the engine rocks about a bit and the PS
is fixed on the body, so you may already have too short a hose length.
Over-rich mixture produced by the hose being off might also be the cause of a
'backfire'.
