I don't think there were ever ANY genuine VW 5.5 x 15 rims. There are lots of 
aftermarket wheels out there however, and someone on this list is bound to have 
experience with almost anything you can come up with.

I'm just saying that there are more variables than just the width. The offset 
is important to handling, because you'd like the ball joint pivot axis to pass 
somewhat close to the center of the tire's contact patch.

BTW, most people who complain about harsh road feel eventually discover that 
they've been overinflating their tires. 20 front/30 rear is a good place to 
start. Don't let anyone tell you to just put 26 or 36 all around.
