The smoke is probably coming from the dimmer resistor. This means that too much current is being drawn thru the dimmer. It's because there's either something connected to the dimmer output that shouldn't be, or there's a short to ground there. If it smokes, you're just milliseconds away from destroying it unless it's already blown. What year is this car? Was it a 6V car converted to 12V? Has somebody "rewired" it? These problems don't strike me as having a single common cause. I would guess that you have multiple problems, caused by either a voltage conversion, or a poorly done rewiring. You seem to have gotten past your problem posting to the list.
