The symptom of the problem coming as quickly as it goes away is a 
tell-tale sign of a bad ground. 68s are known to not have a separate 
ground point on the tail light housings (I dont know if earlier ones 
also didnt, 69-up got ground wires). The symptom of the problem coming 
as quickly as it got away is a tell-tale sign of a bad ground. This 
means that your tails need to find ground through the screws holding the 
tail light base to the fender, and also through the screws that holds 
the fender to the body.

When this problem appears again, try to either
1) check for continuity between the tail light base and a known good 
ground on the main body or
2) use a temporary jumper wire from the tail light base and known good 
ground on the main body.
My guess is that the problem should now be gone.

The remedy is to install ground wires on the lights, a little dab of 
battery grease, vaseline, or any oil (I often use a drop or two from the 
dip stick) should keep the new grounds from developing corrotion and rust.
