They were a standard feature on all type 3s in the US up thru 70. VW discontinued them starting in 71. Your 71 may or may not have to slots in the B pillar needed to install them. If the slots are not there you can cut them, but it is not trivial to do. The cars that came with them originally also had reinforcement plates around those slots and you 71 will not have those.
