Check the shift plate adjustment under the shifter. And check the shift
coupling at the front of the trans. Also, check for sagging or loose
motor/trans mounts.
This sounds like a shift linkage aligment problem rather than a problem
inside the trans.
Worst case I would say, is a problem with the nose cone bushings or a
bent shifter hocky stick in the nose cone.
