With a relay like my 69-vintage one, you can emulate the operation of 
the later system (and of the modern Hella relay that I originally used) 
by removing the wire from the KBL terminal and connecting it to the 49a 
terminal. If you do that, the dash lights flash together with the 
indicators with the ignition off, and out of phase with them with the 
ignition on.

I've no idea whether this has any bad effect on the relay, and I only 
tried it for a couple of seconds to see if it would work.
